Chlorodesmos F.W.Phillips, 1882

Holotype species: Chlorodesmos hispida F.W.Phillips

Original publication and holotype designation: Phillips, F.W. (1884). On Chlorodesmos hispida, a new flagellated animalcule. Transactions of the Herfordshire Natural History Society and Field Club 2: 92-94, 1 pl.

Description: Originally described as having silica scaled biflagellate cells arranged in chainlike colonies, inconsistencies exist in the various descriptions regarding flagellar length, presence of stigma, and cell shape. Scales have been reported to be similar to scales of Synura spinosa. Reproduction not observed. Some species of Synura (especially S. spinosa) may occur in similar filiform colonies, and there is every reason to believe that the genus has been based on such forms and has no validity. Scales have recently been shown by EM to be identical with Synura spinosa scales(Calado and Rino, 1994). Recorded from freshwater localities in various parts of the world.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
