Kyrtuthrix Ercegovic, 1929

Holotype species: Kyrtuthrix dalmatica Ercegovic

Original publication and holotype designation: Ercegovic, A. (1929). Sur quelques nouveaux types des Cyanophycées lithophytes de la côte adriatique. Archiv für Protistenkunde 66: 164-174, 3 figs.

Description: Filamentous; thallus endolithic, irregular, isopolar, composed of more or less parallel filaments, without false or true branchings, but with common lateral loops, rounded at the ends; filaments in loop-like formations grow tightly aside, parallel. Trichomes uniseriate, isopolar, with more or less isodiametric cells, clearly constricted at crosswalls, narrowed to the both hair-like ends up to the sharply pointed terminal cells. Sheaths firm, colorless, slightly widened, not gelatinous. Heterocytes present, intercalary. Akinetes missing. Cell division crosswise. Reproduction by hormogonia. Trichomes divide and separate usually at the top of loops (without connection with heterocytes) and the ends of divided trichomes grow and later form new attenuated trichome ends. Marine; the single species grows on limestone rocks in the Mediterranean region (France, Greece, Yugoslavia).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
