Description: Cells solitary, short-cylindrical, barrel-shaped, ellipsoid to broadly oval, with rounded poles, usually without a mucilage envelope (if present, the envelope thin and structure-less), 3-13 x 2-9 µm. Cell wall smooth and colorless other than for dark-brown incrustations on the surface which appear rather regularly distributed mostly at the poles and in the equatorial region and as longitudinal ribs. Chloroplast single, parietal with (?or without) pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by (2)-4-(8) autospores which are released upon dissolution of the mother cell wall. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Amphikrikos planktonic, reported from Cuba, Czechoslovakia, England, France(?), Germany, India, Ivory Coast, Russia, Ukraine and United States.
