Pseudotetrastrum Hindák, 1977

Holotype species: Pseudotetrastrum punctatum (Schmidle) Hindák

Original publication and holotype designation: Hindák, F. (1977). Studies on the chlorococcal algae (Chlorophyceae). I. Biologicke Práce 23: 1-192.

Description: Thalli mostly colonial, forming 4-celled coenobia 7-12 µm in diameter, these sometimes disintegrating to form free-living cells, or forming up to 16-celled syncoenobia without apparent mucilaginous envelope. Cell wall colorless to yellowing-brown with finely granulate surface; granules mostly irregularly spherical, occasionally linear, generally more dense on wall surfaces not touching other cells; less frequently uniformly distributed. Cells spherical to ovoid, 2.5-7 x 2.5-7 µm. Cells uninucleate; single chloroplast cup-shaped and parietal with single pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospore formation producing 4-celled coenobia; these released by rupture of the end of the cells. Fragments of parental cell wall loosely attached to new coenobium. Pseudotetrastrum planktonic in variety of freshwater, eutrophic systems including rivers, lakes, fish ponds; reported from Europe, India and Ivory Coast. Genus distinguished from Tetrastrum based on the granulation of cell walls. The only species of Pseudotetrastrum also transferred to Crucigenia by Barta and others (1976). According to Komárek and Fott (1983), Hindak's material is not the same as Schmidle's, but represents a new species. If this is the case, then Pseudotetrastrum may be validly described based on Schmidle's taxon. In addition, as a new species Hindak's material has no Latin diagnosis, is illegitimate and does not belong to his new genus. Further study is required to resolve the taxonomic and nomenclatural problems associated with Pseudotetrastrum.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
