Original publication and holotype designation: Ross, R. & Sims, P.A. (1978). Notes on some diatoms from the Isle of Mull, and other Scottish localities. Bacillaria 1: 151-168.

Description: Frustules rectangular in girdle view; cingulum of each valve a single connecting band. Valves more or less linear, with elongate narrow depressions flanking either side of the curved raphe but more strongly developed along its concave side; outer raphe fissures reflexed at central and terminal nodules. Central nodule elongate; deep longitudinal costae extend along both sides of the raphe from the central nodule to the well-developed terminal helictoglossae. Poroid areolae arranged into longitudinal striae; transverse striae parallel. Freshwater ?aerophile with an apparent requirement for high conductivity; thus far reported primarily from the Scottish Isles.
