Cistula Cleve, 1894

Holotype species: Cistula lorenziana (Grunow) Cleve

Description: Cells united in chains by being joined end to end on a long mucous stipe. Frustules rectangular in girdle view, girdle simple. Valves rectangular, with rounded corners and slightly undulate sides. Valve surface punctate, puncta arranged in slightly radiate transverse striae; striae crossed by several longitudinal blank lines. Axial area narrow or suppressed. Apical nodules small, removed slightly from the apices of the valve; central nodule small, square. Raphe straight, enclosed between 2 silceous ribs. Cistula has been recorded in the Mediterranean and off the coasts of China, eastern Mexico, northern Europe and England. The rectangular shape of the valves and the absence of thickened, pencil-point ("porte-crayon") terminal nodules help distinguish Cistula from Frustulia species.
