Description: Solitary, single-celled organisms. Cells short cylindrical and flattened with two divergent spines at each pole. In face view more or less square with a spine at each angle; in side view elliptical. Cells 7-12 µm long; spines 20-30 µm long. Up to six parietal chloroplasts per cell without pyrenoids. Storage products in the form of oil bodies. Asexual reproduction not observed. Spherical cysts 5-7 µm diameter reported with two equal valves. During cyst formation the mother cell wall becomes dived into two equal portions.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as neuter.
