Currently accepted name for the type species: Hazenia capsulata (Tupa) Škaloud & Leliaert

Original publication and holotype designation: Tupa, D.D. (1974). An investigation of certain chaetophoralean algae. Beihefte zum Nova Hedwigia 46: 1-155, [19 pages of plates].

Description: Plants entirely prostrate, irregular to somewhat disc-like, consist of uniseriate filaments, a simple or with few to many lateral branches. Thalli with or without and enveloping gelatinous sheath. Cells uninucleate, each with parietal chloroplast and pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by naked, symmetrical, quadriflagellate zoospores. Zoospores with parietal chloroplast, single pyrenoid, stigma, and 2 contractile vacuoles. Reproduction also by aplanospores. Sexual reproduction unknown. Chamaetrichon originally isolated from surface of submerged liverwort and leaves of Sagittaria in shallow drainage area in Texas, USA. More recently isolated from soil and aquatic habitats in northern Europe. Structurally similar to Protoderma but differs in producing quadriflagellate rather than biflagellate zoospores.
