Heterochlamydomonas Ed.R.Cox & Deason, 1969

Holotype species: Heterochlamydomonas inaequalis Ed.R.Cox & T.R.Deason

Original publication and holotype designation: Cox, E.R. & Deason, T.R. (1969). Heterochlamydomonas, a new alga from Tennessee. Journal of the Tennessee Academy of Sciences 44: 105-107.

Description: Unicellular thalli ellipsoidal with a rounded to blunt posterior pole. Two anterior anisokont flagella. Basal bodies parallel. Highly-dissected and perforate, parietal chloroplast contains a single pyrenoid and stigma. Papilla absent. Single nucleus positioned near posterior end. Two anterior contractile vacuoles. Asexual reproduction by zoosporogenesis (sporangium non-motile) resulting in two to eight motile daughter cells. No other asexual stages have been reported. Sexual reproduction is (probably) isogamous. Zygotes are spherical without wall ornamentation.

Comments: All species of Heterochlamydomonas are known only from soil samples from Bledsoe, Van Buren, and Wilson counties in Tennesse (United States). Floyd and others have studied the ultrastructure of the flagellar apparatus in H. inaequalis. No biochemical or molecular data are available for this organism.
