Description: Macroscopically forming dry masses, composed of spherical to ovoid or saccate cells, 12–25 ?m in diameter, with a thin cell wall, and a single large central nucleus. Chloroplast parietal and partially perforate, with one to several pyrenoids surrounded by many starch grains. Vegetative cell division resulting in aggregations of two to eight daughter cells within a parental cell wall, which are set free as they grow. Asexual reproduction by quadriflagellate zoospores, formed in fours or eights from transformed vegetative cells; zoospores drop-shaped, motile only briefly, rapidly becoming spherical. Sexual reproduction not observed.
