Description: Unicellular, ellipsoid to irregular stipitate cells, capable of forming a discoid attachment structure; averaging 20 x 5_m, with giant cells up to 60 _ 20_m formed in culture. Single yellow-green chloroplast. Zoospores with two emergent flagella, the shorter one very narrow for most of its length; ultrastructure of zoospore of P. ovalis described by Hibberd and Leedale (1972) under the name Ellipsoidion acuminatum.

Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Characiopsis.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.
