Holotype species: Boreadinium pisiforme J.D.Dodge & Hermes

Original publication and holotype designation: Dodge, J.D. & Hermes, H.B. (1981). A revision of the Diplopsalis group of dinoflagellates (Dinophyceae) based on material from the British Isles. Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society 83: 15-26.

Description: Medium-sized (about 40 µm) thecate dinoflagellate, slightly compressed. Cingulum median, circular; sulcus on the hypocone with prominent list at the left side. The first apical plate is five-sided, the apical intercalary plate is very large. Plate formula: Po, X, 4', 1a, 7", 4c, 5(?)s, 5"', 1"". Cell content unknown, presumably heterotrophic without chloroplasts. Cysts and sexual reproduction unknown. Marine plankton, rarely recorded from the shelf region, North Sea, Japanese waters?
