Holotype species: Triposolenia truncata Kofoid

Original publication and holotype designation: Kofoid, C.A. (1906). Dinoflagellata of the San Diego region. I. On Heterodinium, a new genus of the Peridinidae. University of California Publications in Zoology 2: 341-368, 3 pls.

Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Gómez, F. (2005). A list of free-living dinoflagellate species in the world's oceans. Acta Botanica Croatica 64: 129-212.

Description: Large (100-250 µm) flagellates with a seemingly tripartite, laterally compressed body. Three long and narrow extensions arising from the midbody which is either more or less triangular or sack-like, one anterior, made up of "head", "neck", and an anterior process, the other 2 posterior, the antapicals, one dorsal and one ventral. The 3 extensions are normally subequal. The "head" is formed by the very reduced epicone, separated by the circular cingulum with its 2 narrow lists. The sulcus with its lists starts at the cingulum and extends on the long "neck" to the anterior process, not reaching the body. Nucleus is ovoid and located in the body. Chloroplasts described in the original description, but later observations of some species did not supported the presence of chloroplasts. Perhaps endosymbionts or food vacuoles are present as demonstrated in Amphisolenia Stein. Thecal plate pattern unknown. Sexual processes and resting cyst formation not known. Marine oceanic plankton, widespread in tropical to warm-temperate ocean waters.

Numbers of names and species: There are 10 species names in the database at present, of which 10 have been flagged as accepted taxonomically on the basis of the listed literature under the species name. In some instances, opinions on taxonomic validity differ from author to author and users are encouraged to form their own opinion. AlgaeBase is a work in progress and should not be regarded as a definitive source only as a guide to the literature..

Names: ('C' indicates a name that is accepted taxonomically; 'S' a homotypic or heterotypic synonym; 'U' indicates a name of uncertain taxonomic status, but which has been subjected to some verification nomenclaturally; 'P' indicates a preliminary AlgaeBase entry that has not been subjected to any kind of verification. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
