Didymochrysis Pascher, 1929

Holotype species: Didymochrysis paradoxa Pascher

Original publication and holotype designation: Pascher, A. (1929). Beiträge zur allgemeinen Zellehre. I. Doppelzellige Flagellaten und Parallelentwichlungen zwischen Flagellaten und Algenschwärmern. Archiv für Protistenkunde 68: 261-304.

Description: Cells solitary, ellipsoid to ovoid, more or less flattened in the longitudinal axis, bearing 2 long and 2 short flagella. Protoplast contains 1 nucleus, 2 or 4 contractile vacuoles, 2 chloroplasts and 2 stigmata. Reproduction by longitudinal division of the cell. Stomatocysts spherical, with smooth surface. Sexual reproduction not observed. Found in freshwater lakes and ponds in Czechoslovakia. Several authors believe that Didymochrysis represents a double Ochromonas possessing several paired organelles (such as flagella, chloroplasts, stigmata, contractile vacuoles), whereas there is a single nucleus only.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
