Eusphaerella Skuja, 1948

Holotype species: Eusphaerella turfosa Skuja

Currently accepted name for the type species: Uroglenopsis turfosa (Skuja) R.H.Thompson & D.E.Wujek

Original publication and holotype designation: Skuja, H. (1948). Taxonomie des Phytoplanktons einiger Seen in Uppland, Schweden. Symbolae Botanicae Upsalienses 9(3): 1-399, 39 pls.

Description: Colonies free-swimming, hemispherical to gastrula-shaped, up to 400 &m in diam., inside hollow and with a large, round, aperture at the posterior pole. Cells numerous, arranged in a single layer at the periphery of the colony, each cell bearing 2 flagella of unequal length. In surface view cells are usually tightly packed and hexagonal in shape by mutual compression, in larger colonies they lie sometimes more distantly from each other and are more or less spherical, in side view they are ellipsoid to ovoid in shape. Protoplast with one or 2 chloroplasts, a single stigma and posteriorly with 2 contractile vacuoles. During adverse conditions the colonies may be surrounded by a rather thick gelatinous coat. Stomatocysts may be formed by each cell of a colony. Reproduction not observed. Planktonic, in freshwater lakes, rarely observed.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
