Holotype species: Heliapsis mutabilis Pascher

Original publication and holotype designation: Pascher, A. (1940). Filarplasmodiale Ausbildungen bei Algen. Archiv für Protistenkunde 94: 295-309.

Description: Cell surrounded by a thick-walled lenticular lorica, perforated by 3-7 openings arranged equatorially, through which cytoplasmic filaments extend, connecting with similar filaments from other cells so that reticulate colonies are formed. Chloroplasts reduced or lacking. Reproduction by division of the protoplast; daughtercells leave the lorica, secrete their own lorica, but retain the cytoplasmic connection with each other. Stomatocysts unknown. One species reported from freshwater in Czechoslovakia; one marine in New Zealand.
