Mycochrysis Skuja, 1958

Holotype species: Mycochrysis oligothiophila Skuja

Original publication and holotype designation: Skuja, H. (1958). Mycochrysis nov. gen. vertreterin eines neuen typus der Kolonienbildung bei den gefärbten Chrysophyceae. Svensk Botanisk Tidskrift 52: 23-36.

Description: Colonies mushroom-shaped, up to 3 mm, with the cells forming a domed layer on top of a tapering column of mucilage. Mucilaginous base often irregularly dichotomous, with up to 12 or more branches, each terminated by a separate dome-shaped layer of cells. Each cell embedded in the colonial matrix with a thin gelatinous stalk emerging from its base. Individual cells metabolic, ellipsoid to obovate, with 2 unequal flagella, 1-2 chloroplasts, 1 stigma, 1-2 contractile vacuoles and, at the posterior end of the cell, often with 1-2 nutritive vacuoles. The colonies can release free-swimming single cells which cannot be distinguished from Ochromonas cells. Free-swimming cells settle down on different substrata, sometimes attaching to the stalks of the colonies forming secondary groups of cells. Reproduction by longitudinal division of the cells. Stomatocysts have been observed. Only known from the original description growing attached to vegetation and other substrata in waters rich in hydrogen sulfide in Latvia.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
