Description: Thallus an unbranched uniseriate filament, fixed with a colorless basal cell to a substratum. Cells cylindrical with 1-2 parietal chloroplasts. Vegetative division oblique (45%), then the daughtercells arrange themselves longitudinally. Swarmers arebiflagellate of Ochromonas type, formed directly from aprotoplast. They have a stigma, but no contractile vacuoles. Stomatocysts and palmella stages are known. Marine, found along British and Adriatic coasts. One species, N. hieroglyphia Waern, has been transferred to Chrysowaernella.The taxonomic position of the two other species may be questioned.
