Siphomonas E.G.Pringsheim, 1946

Holotype species: Siphomonas fritschii E.G.Pringsheim

Original publication and holotype designation: Pringsheim, E.G. (1946). On iron flagellates. Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London B Biological Sciences 232: 311-342, pls 8, 9.

Description: Cells colorless, with their posterior ends inserted singly or in groups of two in the tops of a system of hollow, cylindrical, rather regularly forked stalks. Stalks light to dark brown in color, containing compounds of iron and manganese. Cells naked, usually ovoid or pyriform, with 2 unequal flagella at the emarginate anterior end. Stigma present or absent. Contractile vacuole not observed. Several food vacuoles containing bacteria may be present. The cells often occur without stalks and in this case cannot be distinguished from Spumella (Monas). Reproduction and stomatocysts unknown. The stalks of Siphomonas closely resemble those of Cladomonas, which has an uncertain taxonomic position (possibly related to Spongomonadida). With regard to the cell structure and flagellation, Siphomonas appears to be closely related to Anthophysa and Siderodendron. Found attached to surfaces or floating in more or less polluted alkaline freshwater; only recorded from England and France.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
