Description: Cells spherical to pyriform-oval with two to eight or more yellow-brown chloroplasts, one or more contractile vacuoles, with or without a stigma; heterokont flagellation; scales lacking. Colony usually possessing mucilage; minute close-branching system of gelatinous "tubes" at the center of a colony only becoming visible upon fragmentation and then only if impregnated with iron compounds or stained with methylene blue.
