Holotype species: Tetrachrysis dendroides A.J.Dop

Original publication and holotype designation: Dop, A.J. (1980). The genera Phaeothamnion Lagerheim., Tetrachrysis gen. nov. and Sphaeridiothrix Pascher & Vlk (Chrysophyceae). Act. Bot. Neerl. 29: 65-86.

Description: The filamentous, branched thallus consists of a series of 2 or 4 cells surrounded by a mucilaginous sheath. Each series originates from simultaneous cell divisions. Cells have 1-2 parietal chloroplasts, a chrysolaminaran vacuole and lipid droplets. Reproduction by swarmers, 1-2 from each mother cell, having 1-2 chloroplasts and a stigma. Flagella heterokont,subapical. Stomatocysts not known. Found in ponds in Europe and North America. This genus was originally considered a palmelloid stage of Phaeothamnion.
