Cyanogranis Hindák, 1982

Holotype species: Cyanogranis basifixa Hindák

Original publication and holotype designation: Hindák, F. (1982). On some planktonic coccoid blue-green algae characteristic by Fe-precipitates. Arch. Hydrobiol./Algolog. Stud. 32: 241-258.

Description: Unicellular-colonial; colonies free-floating, microscopic, to 40-celled, mucilaginous, Å spherical to irregular, embedded by a fine, homogeneous, colorless and more or less diffluent slime, with irregularly localized cells in the center. In the center of the cell cluster is one large, more or less spherical grain, usually brownish with iron oxide precipitate or several small precipitates spread through the colony; colonies without precipitations rare. Cells are heaped around the central body or gathered into small groups, spherical, oval or shortly cylindrical, pale greyish blue-green, without gas vesicles. Cell division (pinching) repeatedly only in one crosswise direction, perpendicular to the long axis of cells in successive generations. Reproduction by dissociation of colonies. Planktonic in ponds and small reservoirs (gravel pit lakes) in Central Europe (Austria, Czechoslovakia, Germany). Little known genus.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
