Cyanothamnos G.Cronberg, 1991

Holotype species: Cyanothamnos plancticus G.Cronberg

Original publication and holotype designation: Cronberg, G. (1991). Cyanothamnos plancticus gen. et sp. nov., a new colonial cyanophyte from an eutrophic Scanian lake, Sweden. Arkiv für Hydrobiologie/Algological Studies 75(Suppl. Vol. 64): 61-70.

Description: Unicellular-colonial; colorless, free-floating, in outline irregularly spherical up to 55 _m diam., composed of irregular and irregularly branched rows of elongated cells, radiating from the center of a colony and irregularly, densely ramified; colony appearance like a densely branched shrub with radially oriented branches. Rows of cells enveloped by very thin, colorless and diffluent mucilage, overlapping sometimes end cells in a form of thin mucilaginous strings; wide gelatinous envelopes missing. Cells cylindrical, rodlike with mostly cut or slightly rounded ends, straight or slightly bent, with pale green, not granular content, without prominent granules and aerotopes; end cells rounded or sometimes rounded-pointed. Common branching arises by a shift of a cell from the original position in the radial row of cells and by a following cell division in a new direction. Cell division only crosswise, perpendicular to the long axis of a cell. Reproduction by dissociation of colonies. The type species is freshwater, planktonic, still known only from one eutrophic lake in S. Sweden.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
