Description: Unicellular, colonial; colonies many-celled, microscopic, composed of mucilaginous tubular microcolonies, usually tapering to one or both ends; microcolonies with gelatinous, limited sheath and central (axial) row of numerous, rod-shaped cells without regular arrangement, but all oriented more or less in the direction of a filamentous microcolony. Sheaths colorless, usually homogeneous, not or only slightly lamellated. Cells cylindrical or elongated ellipsoidal, without own mucilaginous envelopes, single or in pairs after division, more or less parallel; shifted with the length of the tubular microcolony, not forming pseudofilamentous cell rows or regular chains of cells. Cell content homogeneous or slightly granular, olive-green or pale to bright blue-green. Cell division transverse, perpendicular to the longer axis. Multiplication through discharge of cylindrical, feebly motile planocytes from the open ends of tubular sheaths. Different species occur in periphyton and metaphyton of special habitats (thermal springs, alkaline tropical swamps). Little known genus.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
