Tubiella Hollerbach, 1935

Holotype species: Tubiella elenkinii Hollerbach

Description: Unicellular-pseudofilamentous-colonial; colonies widespread in a thin layer on the substrate, gelatinous, blue-green, composed of densely, more or less parallel oriented sheath-like tubes, in which are the cells in one row or (later) in zig-zag or slightly screw-like coiled rows, rarely organized irregularly. Sheaths simple, sometimes slightly widened, colorless, sharply limited or diffluent, not layered, at the ends roundly closed, or (after escaping of solitary cells) opened and cut, (3.3)4 - 6.7 (8.3) m wide. Cells elongated, ellipsoid, oval or cylindrical with rounded ends, with solitary large granules within plasma, touching one to another by their ends. Division only in one plane perpendicular to the long axis of cells. Reproduction by solitary cells escaping from the open sheaths at their apices. Soil species (type-species) known to now only from the vicinity of St. Petersburg (USSR).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
