Cyanotetras Hindák, 1988

Holotype species: Cyanotetras fusca F.Hindák

Original publication and holotype designation: Hindák, F. (1988). Contribution to the taxonomy of some cyanophyte genera. Preslia, Praha 60: 289-308.

Description: Unicellular-colonial; colonies microscopic, free-living, with 1-16, mainly 4-8 cells, which are more or less regularly joined into flat, unilayered, tabular aggregations; the short rows of cells are situated more or less perpendicular to each other; the flat, cellular aggregations are enveloped by spherical, oval or ellipsoidal, not structured, fine mucilaginous envelopes; envelopes colorless or homogeneously colored with fine ferric precipitations. Cells more or less oval, ellipsoidal or slightly irregular ovoid, usually tightly joined one to another; colonies usually slightly elongated in the direction of the longer axis of cells. Cell content pale blue-green or olive-green, without aerotopes, sometimes with dispersed granules. Cell division in 2 perpendicular planes in successive generations; cells remain joined together in 2-4-8-32-celled colonies, later dissociating into smaller colonies, even solitary cells. Poorly known genus, in plankton and metaphyton of small, freshwater, not very eutrophic or polluted reservoirs, mainly with plenty of aquatic plants, rarely in lakes. The type species is known from central Europe, the other ones from subtropical Cuba and from southern Canadian lakes.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
