Description: Thallus erect, epilithic or epiphytic, cylindrical, branched, attached to substratum with a minute discoid holdfast. Axis with leading filament which is a monopodium terminating in an assimilatory filament. Meristematic region above and among youngest ramifications. Internal downward growing hyphae absent. Cortex composed of assimilatory filaments, phaeophycean hairs, and reproductive organs. Assimilatory filaments of one kind, curved, with cylindrical to barrel-shaped cells below and moniliform above. Unilocular sporangia globular to pyriform, borne at base of assimilatory filaments within cortex. Plurilocular sporangia not known. Life history alternation of heteromorphic generations with microscopic "streblonematoid" gametophytes and macroscopic sporophyte (Parke 1933). Gamete fusions not seen and sexuality in Mesogloia needs confirmation. Distributed in Europe from Spain to Norway.
