Original publication and holotype designation: Berger-Perrot, Y. (1981). Création du genre Ulotrichella nov. gen. (Chlorophycées, Ulotrichales). Revue Générale de Botanique 88: 83-86.

Description: Filaments free-floating, short, of 2-20 (or more) firmly adherent cells, uniseriate and unbranched, also with false branching often in form of intercalary loop consisting of up to 16 cells. Cells cylindrical, elongate and with polar vacuoles. Chloroplast single and equatorial, girdle-shaped with one pyrenoid. Multiplication of filaments by divisions of protoplast(s) inside common parental wall with end products forming new cell wall independent (?) of parental wall. Later, a miniature row of 2-8 cells enlarges, causing rupture of parental wall. Remnants of parental wall in form of caps wrapping rounded ends of daughter filaments. Asexual reproduction by quadriflagellate zoospores, 2-8 per cell, with stigma, escaping through hole in lateral cell wall. Ulotrichella planktonic in muddy rain water puddles in India. The false branching resulting in peculiar loop-like arrangements of cells, and vegetative multiplication via multiple protoplast cleavages makes the systematic position of Ulotrichella uncertain. Ultrastructural studies of wall development in daughter protoplasts, i. e. autospore formation, may clarify its position.
