Chlamydonephris H.Ettl & O.Ettl, 1959

Holotype species: Chlamydonephris pomiformis (Pascher) H.Ettl & O.Ettl

Original publication and holotype designation: Ettl, H. & Ettl, O. (1959). Zur Kenntnis der Klasse Volvophyceae. II. Neue oder wenig bekannte Chlamydomonadalen. Archiv für Protistenkunde 104: 51-112, 4 pls.

Description: Cells moderately to strongly reniform with an apical invagination. Two isokont flagella inserted at the apex within the depression. No papilla have been observed. Chloroplast single and cup-shaped or numerous and discoidal. Cell wall present and described as varying from thin to thick. Pyrenoids and stigma absent or present depending on the species. Cells normally have two, apical contractile vacuoles. Asexual reproduction by zoosporogenesis resulting in two or four motile daughter cells. No other asexual stages have been reported. No sexual stages have been observed in this genus. Cells moderately to strongly reniform with an apical invagination. Two isokont flagella inserted at the apex within the depression. Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Pentecost, A. (2002). Order Volvocales. In: The Freshwater Algal Flora of the British Isles. An identification guide to freshwater and terrestrial algae. (John, D.M., Whitton, B.A. & Brook, A.J. Eds), pp. 303-327. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

Comments: The genus Chlamydonephris contains both freshwater and marine representatives. The freshwater representatives, which have been described in more detail, have been found in meltwater and small pools in continental Europe. Ettl describes Chlamydonephris as a parallel of the quadriflagellate genus Pyramichlamys. No ultrastructural, biochemical, or molecular data are available for this organism

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
