Original publication and holotype designation: Christen, H.R. (1959). New colorless Eugleninae. Journal of Protozoology 6: 292-303.

Description: Rigid, ovoid, colorless, phagotrophic flagellates, 25-70 _m long, with 5-8 pronounced helical keels; one flagellum emergent from the subapical canal opening, held straight, anteriorly, during gliding; food vacuoles observed in all species but no ingestion organelle. The taxonomic position of this genus, near to Petalomonas except for the latter's flattened cell and Tropidiscyphus except for the latter's 2 flagella, is discussed by Christen (1959). However, new ultrastructural observations on Calycimonas physaloides (Mignot, 1966) and C. robusta (Triemer and Farmer, 1991b) reveal a simple feeding apparatus consisting of a cytoplasmic pocket reinforced by microtubules. Triemer and Farmer (1991b) argue that this feeding apparatus (Type I in their system) removes the main distinction between Sphenomonadales and Heteronematales and these orders should be merged. Alternatively, it could reasonably be suggested that the order Sphenomonadales be retained for phagotrophic euglenoids with a simple feeding apparatus lacking ingestion rods or siphons.
