Description: Thalli colonial, forming mostly 2-, 4-, 8-celled coenobia, but single cells found specially in culture; coenobia not embedded in mucilage envelope. Cells in coenobium arranged uni- or biseriate, flat or convoluted. Cells broadly fusiform, ellipsoidal to cylindrical 11-32 x 3-16 µm. Cell walls with 3- 6 longitudinal ribs running from pole to pole. Cells uninucleate; one parietal chloroplast with single pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores; 2-8 per sporangium, usually organized into coenobia. Daughter coenobia released by longitudinal rupture of parental cell walls. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown.

Comments: Found on wet rocks and peat bogs or planktonic in freshwater; reported from Europe, Cuba, New Zealand and Kerguelen. Species are distinguished by cell arrangement. Single cells similar to Scotiellopsis. Hindák (1990) transferred Scenedesmus acutiformis to Enallax and lumped all other previously described species into one taxon.
