Holotype species: Groentvedia elliptica Hendey

Original publication and holotype designation: Hendey, N.I. (1964). An introductory account of the smaller algae of British coastal waters. Part V: Bacillariophyceae (diatoms). pp. [i]-xxii, 1-317. London: Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Fishery Investigations. Her Majesty’s Stationery Office.

Description: Cells solitary or forming short chains. Valves sub-circular to broadly elliptical in outline, marginal area with strong, radiating costae and intercostate loculi. Central area punctate. Groentvedia has only been recorded from the marine inshore waters of Denmark. Until SEM and TEM studies if this genus are undertaken, it is not possible to place Groentvedia in a suborder.
