Neodenticula Akiba & Yanagisawa, 1986

Holotype species: Neodenticula kamtschatica (Zabelina) Akiba & Yanagisawa

Original publication and holotype designation: Akiba, F. & Yanagisawa, Y. (1985). Taxonomy, morphology and phylogeny of the Neogene diatom zonal marker species in the middle-to-high latitudes of the North Pacific. In: Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, Vol. 87. Fossil: This is a genus of fossil species, or a genus with a fossil type species, or a genus the type species of which was originally described as a fossil.

Description: Cells growing in short chains. Frustules rectangular in girdle view. Valves short, linear to linear elliptic, with bluntly rounded apices. Transapical striae fine composed of puncta (ca. 30 puncta in 10 _m) in more or less parallel rows with quincunx arrangement. Mantle striae usually more regular, consisting of several rows of puncta in quincunx. Striae separated by costae which are flat on the valve exterior and thickened on the interior; at intervals of 1-5, costae thicker and extend deeper into valve interior as pseudosepta; pseudosepta may extend into girdle region of frustule and may be thickened and flared at each side of valve to produce a marginal, crescent-shaped buttress. Raphe marginal, lying at boundary of valve face and mantle. Raphe continuous, slightly curved at each apex; raphe systems of frustule on opposite margins. Inner raphe system fibulate with fibulae corresponding to costae, each costa branching at margin to form 2 fibulae. A longitudinal costa runs parallel to the raphe on inner surface of valve, forming part of the fibulating system. Cingulum consists of one copula and 1-3 pleurae. Copula closed or with a slit, hyaline or with a row of puncta. If thickened pseudosepta present, copula has arches corresponding to the flared ends of the pseudoseptum, often partially fused to them, thus giving the impression of septa. Pleurae with a slit, smooth. One living species (N. seminae), several fossil forms. Differs from Crucidenticula and Denticulopsis in having very fine puncta, a continuous raphe and branching transapical costae at the raphe-bearing margin, and in lacking marginal costae. Differs from Denticula in having a marginal raphe system, extremely thickened pseudosepta and lacking a keel. Differs from Nitzschia in possessing multiseriate striae and pseudosepta, and in lacking a keel. Most similar to Fragilariopsis from which it differs by the possession of pseudosepta. Marine planktonic, most common in North Pacific but occasionally found in tropical zones of all oceans.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
