Description: Plants generally colonial; colonies commonly four-celled, with cells joined laterally and oriented in same direction. Cells ellipsoidal or cylindrical with a cell wall. Cells with two equal flagella arising from an apical pole of the cell, a stigma and a cup-shaped chloroplast with single basal pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autocolony formation, each cell dividing twice to form a daughter colony within the parental cell wall. Method of sexual reproduction unknown.
