Original publication and holotype designation:Printz, H. (1921). Subaërial algae from South Africa. Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskabs Skrifter 1920(1): 1-41, pls I-XIV.
Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.
Description: Solitary cells or crowded together in loose aggregates. Cells spherical to oval to bean shaped, in P. obliqua 8-12 x 3-5 &m. Cell walls thin, clear or finely granular but without thickenings. Chloroplast parietal, nearly covering the entire face of the cell, without pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by zoospores; released by tear in sporangial wall. Zoospores with stigma. Sexual reproduction unknown. Phaseolaria aerial, epiphytic on tree bark or on damp calcareous walls; P. obliqua from South Africa and P. variabilis from Europe. Genus poorly described and of uncertain taxonomic status.
