Description: Filamentous - thallose; filaments free, creeping or erect, sometimes in fascicles, irregularly branched. Trichomes in basal parts mostly torulous, with distinct constrictions at crosswalls, uniseriate or (rarely) biseriate, with rare true branching (T-type); young trichomes and branches cylindrical; irregular false branching commonly occurs in younger trichomes, developing by help of necridic cells, with one, rarely two branches; branches waved, cylindrical or with waved sides, terminal parts of trichomes cylindrical or slightly widened, end cells widely rounded. Sheaths firm, thin or thick, usually slightly lamellated. Cells blue-green, isodiametric or slightly longer or shorter than wide, usually with solitary distinct granules in the cell content. Heterocytes rare, intercalary, solitary. Akinetes described in one species, in rows in old trichomes. Cell division crosswise, without distinct meristematic zones. Reproduction by hormocysts, which separate solitary or in rows from ends of branches, 8- or more-celled, with firm, thick sheaths. Hormogonia not known. Three species were described from aerophytic localities, wet rocks and walls in limestone areas in southern Italy. All other species and localities should be revised.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
