Description: Free-swimming, biflagellate, ellipsoid monads; slightly to strongly compressed, in lateral view with an obliquely truncate anterior; a tubular gullet extends posteriorly from the sub-apical vestibulum and is lined with four or more conspicuous rows of ejectisomes, without a furrow; a single chloroplast, pyrenoid and nucleomorph, the chloroplast containing the phycobiliprotein Cr-phycoerythrin 545 and varying in color from red-brown to orange and yellow in older cells; the periplast with an inner component sheet and a coarse, fibrillar superficial component sandwiching the plasma membrane. Reproduction occurs by simple cell division; palmelloid colonies are often formed, but cysts and sexual reproduction are unknown. The ultrastructure has been examined; the nucleomorph is located in an invagination of the periplastidial cytoplasm into the pyrenoid; the pyrenoidal matrix is not traversed by thylakoids; the chloroplast is highly lobed with the pyrenoid bridging the two main lateral lobes. An apparently rare cryptomonad, the type species is known only from two collections in England and one in Australia. It is relatively large, up to about 20&m in length, and is known only from coastal marine habitats.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
