Description: Vegetative characters of Spirogyra, chloroplast spiral, cross walls plane; conjugation lateral, scalariform, or cross, beginning in vegetative cells from which smaller gametes are cut off after one nuclear division; bulk of chloroplast passing into gamete: conjugation tube present; female gametangium swollen, containing zygospore.
