Peroniella Gobi, 1886

Holotype species: Peroniella hyalothecae Gobi

Original publication and holotype designation: Gobi, C. (1886). [Unknown title]. Botaniceskija zapiski 1: including p. 249.

Description: Solitary (rarely gregarious), unicellular organisms attached by a long pedicel (9-45 _m long) to the cell walls of other algae, particularly members of Desmidiaceae. Cells 6-20 _m long (without pedicel), 4-8 _m wide ovoid, obovoid, spherical, pyriform or ellipsoidal, and generally rounded at free end. The cell wall is delicate to robust but never thick and drawn out in the basal region where a very long, straight or curved pedicel, sometimes filled with cytoplasm is terminated in some cases with a small attachment disc. Chloroplasts one, two or sometimes many, discoid or lamellate and parietal or dispersed in cytoplasm. Pyrenoids absent. Lipid globules and oil bodies present. Asexual reproduction by zoospores. Two to eight biflagellate zoospores generally formed per mother cell; flagella very different from one another and sometimes single. Zoospores with one, rarely two chloroplasts. Resistant cells known in some species. Peroniella known from acidic lakes, generally attached to other algae (principally Desmidiaceae, Volvocales, ...); reported from central Europe and North and South America. Species distinguished based on cell morphology and cell dimensions, chlorplast number, length and diameter of the pedicel, and presence or absence of attachment pedicel. Four species (P. eudorinae Mohlenbrock and Dillard, 1963; P. kaplaniana Mohlenbrock and Dillard, 1963; P. minuta Rich,, 1935; and P. pandorina Guerrero, 1948) recognized by Mohlenbrock and Dillard (1963) and Starmach (1968) are not recognized by Ettl (1978) who considers their descriptions inadequate.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
