Description: Cells of P. pulcherrima elongate, pervalvar axis very short, usually lying in valve view. Valves linear, asymmetrical about apical axis, with a more-or-less straight ventral margin and a convex dorsal margin. Valve face smooth or corrugated, composed of a single layer of silica, perorated by rounded poroids intermittently arranged into uniseriate striae: occulsions to poroids not observed, but Paddock and Sims (1981) state vela might be present. Raphe system keeled, eccentric, extends whole length of ventral side of valve; fibulae detactable, especially with phase contrast microscopy; height of keel not diminished at midpoint; central and enlarged terminal nodules absent; outer raphe fissure opens through attenuated siliceous lips which continue uninterrupted from apex to apex; terminal ends of raphe recurved, extend to extreme appex of valve; internal raphe fissure opens into a canal formed by slight expansion of both walls of keel, accompanied by local reduction of number of valve puncta to single stria of much smaller poroids; small helictoglossa present at each pole. A marine taxon; distinguished from Nitzschia by unique raphe system.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
