Spinocosmarium Prescott & A.M.Scott, 1942: 16
Lectotype species: Spinocosmarium quadridens (H.C.Wood) Prescott & A.M.Scott
Original publication:Prescott, G.W. & Scott, A.M. (1942). The freshwater algae of Southern United States. I. Desmids from Mississippi, with descriptions of new Species and varieties. Transactions of the American Microscopical Society 61: 1-29.
Type designated inGuiry, M.D. (2013). Taxonomy and nomenclature of the Conjugatophyceae (=Zygnematophyceae). Algae. An International Journal of Algal Research 28: 1-29.
Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.
Description: Cells solitary, compressed (biradiate), with deep median constriction (isthmus) where semicell walls overlap. Each semicell with laterally directed, simple or furcate spines. The type species also may have 1 or 2 spines at each angle of flattened semicell apex. Semicell faces usually with many simple to emarginate warts, often disposed in vertical and horizontal rows. Each semicell with single chloroplast with central pyrenoid. Nucleus in isthmus. Little known regarding reproduction: asexual reproduction by cell division typical of Cosmarium-type desmids assumed. Sexual reproduction not observed.
Comments: Spinocosmarium is endemic to North America, usually in acidic, oligotrophic lakes and ponds; S. quadridens is widespread, S. laconiense is restricted to north-eastern U.S.A. and eastern Canada.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
