Description: Unicellular microscopic algae with spherical to ellipsoidal to oval or egg-shaped cells to 15 µm in maximum dimension. Cell walls thin and smooth. Cells uninucleate; chloroplasts single and parietal when young; many when mature; each with single pyrenoid with thick starch sheath. Asexual reproduction by autospores, 3-4 µm diameter; 2-32 spores per sporangium; released by rupture of parental cell wall. Flagellated cells and sexual reproduction unknown. Planktospherella known only from soil from the Austrian Alps. Genus considered close to Muriella from which it differs based on presence of pyrenoids. Assessment of taxonomic affinities requires additional investigation. Unicellular microscopic algae with spherical to ellipsoidal to oval or egg-shaped cells to 15 µm in maximum dimension. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
