Original publication: Beger, H. (1941). Tumulofilum terrestre, der Vertreter einer neuen Chaetophoraceen-gattung. Berichte der Deutschen Botanischen Gesellschaft 59(5): 174-178.

Description: Plants heterotrichous, consisting of branched, uniseriate filaments, with erect filaments somewhat recurved. Cells uninucleate, barrel-shaped, each with parietal chloroplast and a pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by zoospores and akinetes. Zoospores commonly produced in terminal or intercalary cells of prostrate system, 8 or more per cell, flagella number unknown. Akinetes rounded, thick-walled, formed from cells of prostrate system. Sexual reproduction unknown. Tumulofilum reported from damp soil in Europe where it forms small cushion-like growths just visible to the unaided eye. This terrestrial alga may be close to, or perhaps identical with, Pleurothamnion.
