Description: Free-swimming, slightly pyriform, biflagellate monads; cells surrounded by a thick membrane with five shallow grooves and a small opening at the anterior; flagella subequal, arising from an apical 'nipple'; furrow-gullet system and associated ejectisomes lacking; two band-shaped, twisted or turned, vivid blue-green chloroplasts present with associated pyrenoids; a single contractile vacuole is located anteriorly; the nucleus has been observed. A little known freshwater genus. No resting stages or reproductive phases have been observed. The cells "have the trick of attaching themselves by the anterior nipple, with the flagella opposed" (Lackey 1936), and nutrition is thought to be holophytic. The type species was described from a fresh water lime sink pond in Morgan County, Alabama, USA. When this enigmatic genus is better characterized, it is unlikely to remain classified with the cryptomonads.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
