Description: Free-swimming, biflagellate monads; typically dorsiventral, weakly ellipsoidal or bean-shaped, the anterior more acute, with a weak twist at the middle; the furrow runs obliquely across the cell, deeper on the ventral side, with ejectisomes lining the more shallow dorsal side; two peripheral chloroplasts appressed to each side of the furrow, yellow-brown, red or blue-green, usually overlapping or divided; a large stigma near point of flagella insertion; a small, posterior, strongly refractive body; flagella subequal, one straighter, the other more 'snake-like'; the longer is posteriorly directed, the other is band-like, possessing short hairs. Autotrophic. Divides while immobile, the cells rounding up and making 4-8 cell, mucilaginous colonies. Little known genus - an unusual member ot the Hemiselmidaceae in the possession of a furrow rather than gullet. The type species is freshwater from Bohemia and one other species is known from brackish water in Belgium. There is some question as to the distinction of this genus from Hemiselmis Parke. Ultrastructure unknown.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
