Description: Filamentous-thallose; thallus crusty, flat, 2-3-layered, widely spread on the substrate, with usually erect, parallel and densely arranged or slightly tangled filaments, confluent laterally by their sheaths. Trichomes uniseriate, rarely with 2 cells aside, with constrictions at crosswalls, cylindrical or slightly narrowed in the basal and widened near the apical part; in the upper parts with numerous false branchings, in the lower ones with true branchings of the T-type; branches arising from false ramification are usually short, perpendicular to the original trichome, changing often into hormocysts. The lower parts of thallus with destroyed, dying trichomes. The true branches grow initially perpendicular to the mother trichome, later curve to the direction of the original trichome. Sheaths around old trichomes usually colorless, homogeneous and thin, diffluent and confluent at the margin, in the younger (upper) part of thallus lamellated, funnel-like striated, with yellow-brown inner layers. Cells barrel-shaped. Heterocytes intercalary or basal (after false branching),solitary. Akinetes not known. Cells divide crosswise, particularly in subapical meristematic zones. Reproduction by hormocysts or by fragmentation of filaments. Aerophytic, known only from dry walls in China (Yunnan).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
