Holotype species: Cecidochloris stichogloeae Skuja

Currently accepted name for the type species: Cecidochloris adnata (Korshikov) H.Ettl

Original publication and holotype designation: Skuja, H. (1948). Taxonomie des Phytoplanktons einiger Seen in Uppland, Schweden. Symbolae Botanicae Upsalienses 9(3): 1-399, 39 pls.

Description: Thalli unicellular or colonial to 20-30 &m diameter, with 2, 4, 8 or 16 cells per colony; when colonial, cells with conspicuous mucilaginous envelope. Cells ovate, 6-12 x 4-9 &m, with smooth cell walls and single stigma in midportion of cell, and two contractile vacuoles at apical end. Cells uninucleate; single chloroplast parietal and cup-shaped with single axial pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by internal division of cell into 2, 4, 8, or 16 cells or forming 2-4 biflagellate zoospores. After swimming period zoospores attach to new substrata by apical end, loose flagella and initiate new colony. Sexual reproduction unknown. Cecidochloris in freshwater, mostly endophytic in the mucilage envelopes of various planktonic algae including species of green, blue-green and golden algae. Reported only from Europe. Another species of Cecidochloris, C. tetrasporidiae Iyengar from India, considered poorly described and of unknown affinity.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
