Description: Thalli mostly unicellular, solitary or in clusters; attached directly to substratum or terminal on stalk, rarely with several cells on same stalk. Cells oval to pear-shaped, 13-25 x 6-14 &m, with smooth cell walls and contractile vacuole at base of cell. Cells uninucleate; single chloroplast parietal and cup-shaped all but one species (C. blatnensis) with pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by biflagellate zoospores produced by serial bipartitions of protoplasts in elliptical sporangia to 135 &m long; 8-128 spores per sporangium, released through tear in sporangial wall. Zoospores ovate, 5-13 &m long, with two anterior flagella and anterior eyespot. Sexual reproduction described for three species (all except C. piriformis); isogamous or anisogamous with gametes similar in shape to zoospores but slightly smaller. Syngamy occurs within gametangium; planozygote released through tear in gametangial wall and settles after short swimming period. Zygote spherical, to 12 &m diameter. Position of meiosis not described, however, likely associated with zygote germination. Chlorangiopsis mostly epizoic on planktonic animals, but also epiphytic on algae in freshwater; reported from northern and eastern Europe and from India. Species distinguished based on length of stalk, number of spores and gametes produced, presence or absence of pyrenoids and cell shape. Several species previously described in genus currently assigned to Chlorangium, but Characiochloris anophelesii Iyengar (1975) may belong to Chlorangiopsis.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
