Description: Thalli microscopic, forming spherical to oval or irregular colonies with 4-8-16 cells embedded in mucilaginous envelope. Cells in groups of 4 and tetrahedrally arranged; joined in various planes by thin, simple or branched, hyaline or brown threads of compact mucilage. Cells spherical, oval to kidney-shaped, 7-10 &m in diameter or length. Cell walls mostly thin and smooth, sometimes with verrucose outgrowths at attachment points of threads. Single nucleus central; chloroplast parietal, uniform or indistinctly reticulate, without pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by autospores and zoospores. Daughter cells at first closely aggregated, released by fragmentation and partial or complete dissolution of parental cell walls. The structure of zoospores, sexual reproduction and resting stages unknown. Dictyochlorella planktonic or in bogs; rare, reported from Europe and Brazil.
