Original publication and holotype designation: Dangeard, P.[-A.] (1947). Sur un genre nouveau de Chlorophycée épiphyte d'eau douce (Ectogeron Elodeae, nov. gen. nov. sp.). Le Botaniste 33: 3-18.

Description: Solitary cells epiphytic or on various substrata; in surface view spherical to amorphous in outline. Cells distinctly flattened, to 50-60 &m diameter and to 15 &m high. Cell walls thicker on upper side of cell with wrinkled surface. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast parietal; when young, pyrenoid single, later 15-20. Asexual reproduction by biflagellate zoospores and aplanospores; up to 64-128 spores per sporangium. Zoospores flattened, 7-9 x 6-7 x 2.5-3.5 &m, with contractile vacuoles and parietal chloroplast with pyrenoid and stigma. Sexual reproduction isogamous. Ectogeron mostly epiphytic on submerged macrophytes in freshwater; reported only from France and Austria. Taxonomic position of Ectogeron unclear with genus variously assigned to Characiaceae or Chlorochytriaceae.
